Between Belle Époque, Mountain Air and Wellness
This short trip was not about taking on a sporting challenge. We wanted to leave everyday life behind for a few days, slow down and experience Bad Gastein without rushing. The combination of wellness, alpine scenery and historic architecture gave our break a wonderfully peaceful setting. The townscape, with its magnificent Belle Époque buildings, is particularly striking. Between them, the waterfall plunges through the heart of Bad Gastein, making the town’s alpine setting immediately tangible. It is precisely this contrast that gives the place its unmistakable character: grand façades, steep slopes and the natural surroundings of the Gastein Valley all lie close together here. The atmosphere around the Grand Hotel de l’Europe also repeatedly evokes the visual world of Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel”. Although the famous filming location for the hotel lobby was the Görlitz department store in Saxony, the visual connection to Bad Gastein is easy to understand. Together with our wellness break at the Europäischer Hof, this became a short trip shaped by tranquillity, nostalgia and small discoveries.

Our exploration focused on Bad Gastein and its distinctive combination of a historic townscape, waterfall and alpine surroundings. No conventionally mapped route with distance or elevation data is available for this city tour.
Personal note
What stays with us most is the feeling of having truly stepped away from everyday life for a few days. It was not one particular activity, but the combination of wellness, mountain air, old façades and the town’s distinctive character that made this break so special for us.
