Birthday Beer on the Nebelhorn

After work, we were drawn out to Oberstdorf once again. Our main plan was simply to buy our Superschnee annual passes. But the quick detour turned into a little birthday trip, with Lou’s first gondola ride, a cold beer on the Nebelhorn and wonderful views across the clearly defined peaks of the Allgäu. ⛰️🍺

Tour report

A Birthday Evening Between Oberstdorf and the Nebelhorn

In sunny and very hot weather, we set off for Oberstdorf after work. Temperatures in the valley were around 34 to 37 degrees, and the town was correspondingly busy. Visitors from Germany and abroad filled the streets, yet the atmosphere remained pleasant, cheerful and lively. Our actual goal was to buy Superschnee annual passes for both of us—a pass for the region that will accompany us on future hikes and ski days. That moment alone heightened our anticipation of many more days outdoors. Lou was with us this time, and a first awaited him: his very first gondola ride. 🐾🚡 Dogs are required to wear a muzzle on the Nebelhornbahn. After speaking with the other passengers, we were able to remove Lou’s muzzle during the ride. This allowed him to enjoy his first gondola journey in a relaxed way. He adapted well to the unfamiliar situation and seemed to enjoy the ride just as much as we did. It was lovely to see how calmly and naturally he handled this new experience. At the top of the Nebelhorn, the real birthday moment awaited us. We treated ourselves to a small, cold beer and let our gaze wander across the clearly defined mountain formations and peaks. The clear air, the wind and the sense of space turned our short trip into a special moment. At the same time, we were able to watch the renovation work on the Koblat lift progressing. Vehicles, trucks, building materials and a crane all had to be transported to an altitude of around 2,000 metres. Up close, it became clear just how much logistical and physical effort goes into this work. We have great respect for everyone working in these conditions to prepare operations for the coming winter. After our time on the mountain, we took the cable car back down into the valley. Before leaving Oberstdorf, we stopped at the Wilden Männle for a bite to eat. Then we drove home, where the birthday celebrations continued with friends. What remained was the feeling of an entirely successful afternoon: carefree, grateful and happy. It was not a long day of touring, but a short trip filled with little memories—new annual passes in our pockets, Lou’s successful gondola debut and a birthday beer with my love high above the Allgäu. ☀️⛰️

A cold birthday beer, clear mountain air and views across the peaks—that was all we needed that afternoon.

Route

The route.

Our trip began in Oberstdorf. After buying our Superschnee annual passes, we took the Nebelhornbahn up the mountain. At the top, there was time for a birthday beer, views of the surrounding peaks and a chance to observe the ongoing work on the Koblat lift. We then took the gondola back down into the valley and stopped at the Wilden Männle in Oberstdorf before driving home. Dogs are required to wear a muzzle on the Nebelhornbahn. In our case, after speaking with the other passengers, we were able to remove Lou’s muzzle during the gondola ride.

Personal note

What we will remember most is how naturally Lou took to his first gondola ride. Together with the new annual passes and our anticipation of future days in the Allgäu, this short trip felt like the beginning of many more shared experiences.
