Between Island Bays and Old Memories
We set off from Asprovalta at 8:00 a.m. and drove to Keramoti. From there, we took the ferry across to Thassos. Once on the island, we followed the coast on a complete circuit, discovered picturesque bays and took time for a swim. In Limenaria, we had a very special reunion: after more than 25 years, we met an old comrade from our army days again. Meeting a cousin was another of the day’s personal moments. Back at the ferry port, there was still time for a little shopping in the town of Thassos. We then took the ferry back to the mainland and continued into the Nestos Delta. We visited Galani and Toxotes and took in the impressive course of the Nestos River. On the way to Xanthi, we passed the former divisional base and had a look at the 25th Armoured Division. We rounded off the day with a stop in Kavala, where we had something to eat. At around midnight, we arrived back at our starting point in Asprovalta—after a wonderful, adventurous and deeply nostalgic day.

Route
The route.
Starting in Asprovalta, we drove to Keramoti and took the ferry to Thassos. We completed a full circuit of the island, stopping at various bays and visiting Limenaria. We then returned to the ferry port, spent some time in the town of Thassos and crossed back to the mainland. From there, we continued into the Nestos Delta, visiting Galani and Toxotes before travelling via the former divisional base to Xanthi. On the return journey, we stopped for a meal in Kavala and arrived in Asprovalta at around midnight.
Personal note
Above all, it is the encounters from this day that will stay with us. Standing once again among familiar people and in places we knew after so many years made this tour far more than just an outing. Together, we were able to bring old memories back to life while creating new ones at the same time.
