Viehscheid in Oberstdorf

Together with Lou, we headed to Oberstdorf to experience the traditional Viehscheid (cattle run). In warm, sunny weather, living Allgäu traditions met a large number of visitors from the region and far beyond.

Tour report

Traditions, a Coffee Break and Time in the Meadows

The Viehscheid in Oberstdorf drew a great many people to the Allgäu that day. Shuttle buses were running between Oberstdorf and the Nordic Zentrum Oberstdorf. Once there, we experienced the traditional event among the many visitors and enjoyed the beautiful, lively atmosphere. We found it interesting to see how many visitors from North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands were wearing traditional Bavarian attire. After the Viehscheid, we slowly left the bustle behind and settled down for a cup of coffee in Oberstdorf. T.LIKES.IT had pumpkin soup, while we enjoyed the warm, sunny afternoon. ☕ To make sure Lou also got his share of enjoyment, we then set off on a long walk through the meadows and fields around Oberstdorf. He particularly loved the freshly cut grass, rolling around in it again and again and making it clear just how much he enjoyed this part of the day.

Moment

A sunny day in the Allgäu, between living traditions, the bustle of Oberstdorf and peaceful moments in the meadows.

Route

The route.

Our tour combined a visit to the Viehscheid at the Nordic Zentrum Oberstdorf with some time in Oberstdorf itself. Afterwards, we took Lou on a long, easy walk through the surrounding meadows and fields. From Oberstdorf, we continued to the village of Ruby. We made another brief stop there and enjoyed the magnificent view of the Alpine landscape over a beer. It was so beautiful that we did not want to go home, so we decided to take the route back via Bad Hindelang – where we stopped for another short break and had an ice cream before saying goodbye.

Personal note

What we will remember most is the beautiful contrast of the day: first the lively bustle of the Viehscheid, then coffee and pumpkin soup in the sunshine, and finally Lou joyfully rolling around in the freshly cut grass again and again.
