Tour report

Between Alpine Vistas and the Tracks of Bears

Metsovo surprised us with a landscape we would initially have expected to find in Switzerland, Austria or around Oberstdorf. The surroundings felt alpine, expansive and pleasantly unspoilt. In sunny, warm weather, we were able to take our time and absorb this special side of Epirus. The landscape itself was the focus of our stay. It needed no spectacular staging: the alpine character, untouched expanses and peaceful atmosphere were what made the area so special to us. Metsovo felt like a retreat in its own right, distinctly different from our previous impressions of Greece. Our journey was also guided by the idea of following the tracks of bears. The bear population in northern Greece is estimated at over 800 bears 🐻. For that very reason, we approached the subject with due care, always conscious that we were travelling through a largely unspoilt landscape. Beyond this summer visit, we can see many possibilities for further exploration in Metsovo. The thought of returning in winter has stayed with us in particular. The alpine landscape makes us curious to see what the area is like in winter conditions and how it would feel to ski here one day.

Moment

Pristine alpine landscapes that reminded us more of Switzerland or Austria than Greece.

Route

The route.

After visiting the Meteora monasteries, we continued into the Epirus Mountains. Our focus was on exploring the area around Metsovo, with its pristine, alpine landscapes.

Personal note

What stays with us most is this unexpected contrast: sunny warmth paired with a distinctly alpine landscape. Metsovo made us want to return in winter and experience the area from a new perspective.
